This image has been nominated for deletion. The nominator states:

I have no idea how saying "F**k Bush" with a stick figure alien is going help in anyway... also..... this is marked as "Child Friendly" and this does not seem to be child friendly.....besides..... this seems to be like an imature prank by someone who just can't seem to take this seriously in my opinion.... also, this may get a few people angry....... like me.... and also many others who i can name...... wouldn't the pic be considered abuse?

The image has already been classified as adult, and so will soon be abscurred from view by all but logged in adults. However the issue of deletion needs discussion.

Let's have some opinion on this one

I think the message should stay, as this is clearly someones opinion, and exactly what The One Million Masterpiece is about.

I also agree that maybe the image could be toned down a bit - perhaps with well placed stars **** in the needed places, as this would still put the point across, but for everyone to see.

I personally think it has to stay because the whole point is that you can do with your square as you please. If we all take a vote on what gets deleted then we are not seeing a true picture of society, just the majority. If Paul has to decide whether or not to delete something then he is influencing the project and it becomes a giant picture of what Paul finds acceptable!

However, I dont honestly think it can stay the way it is either (!), because it is offensive to some. I like the idea of being able to put *** or blur out bits that are reported as being offensive. What is going to happen if someone writes something racist or something personal about an individual? I dont envy the person that has to decide what to do about this! L smiley

I agree with Laura 100% and hate the fact that we have to have these discussions. It is a balance between artistic freedom v's charity involvement v's the wish to protect children.

There are only two circumstances that images will automatically be deleted:

1) Person is not verifiable - i.e. no personal details are provided and email address is invalid. This kind of entry would not count towards the world record and therefore will be deleted.

2) Infringement of privacy legislation (i.e. posting up someone private details)

In all other cases unsuitable images will be screened from view (although this system isn't operational yet...). However as a community I would like to see a debate as to whether (and where) a line is drawn.

The time might not be right just yet for this debate, as we need lots of input in order to draw up some kind of democratically decided code. Maybe we need a wikipedia style page to start forming a OMM rulebook!

I thought that the guy making this complaint deserved a voice however and so I've posted his objection. I'll invite him to comment.

Hi all,

I feel that as the number of contributions grow then also the number of controversial squares will also grow. Any debate about censorship would, I feel, need the support of some underlying rules that have the goals of the project at their heart. Deletion without rules would lay any square open for deletion or attack.

Deletion of a sqaure should only be done if there is a contravention of such rules, and such rules would have to be objective. The rules stated above by Paul are good, objective rules for such a matter. Deleting a square that is considered offensive is purely subjective and as such is an issue that has dogged art and other media in the past.

A democratic evolution of rules is a great idea, but simply voting squares off the project could be very bad.

That is my two-pence-worth. Pip.

The square in question is obviously a political statement; a common occurrence in art. Therefore, it should not be deleted. The complainer is apparently a control-freak.

i think the whole point of this is to portray what we wish. so, perhaps it is 'rude' but, it is a political view, nothing more, nothing less

As a republican (and someone who voted for bush), I'm annoyed.
As a person (and someone who voted for the lesser of two evils), I understand.
As a contributor and someone who read the mission of this project, I really think it should stay.
Although, perhaps asking for some letters to be censored, or "child unfriendly" to be tagged would be appropriate (profanity isn't really considered "safe for minors"...at least in the US).

Let the picture stay. Assume that the children people are so eager to protect will be getting their jollies elsewhere just like the rest of us did when we were kids.

Daniel Burke, Can is 18 and from Turkey, so he did not have the luxury to vote for either candidate in either race. If he has to put up with decisions our leader makes, at least let him post on it (regardless of your opinion of taste). Consider that the heft of most of the decisions our leader made are closer to Turkey than our homes. smiley

I think many people from Can's part of the world, not to mention elsewhere, would agree whole heartedly with the political statement boldly emblazoned in this square. I dont think it should be deleted, or edited in any way, other than to enable "Child Safe" while on the web. I think the only place I could draw the line in questionable images would be those depicting child porn. This image is timely, bold, and oozing with emotion - both in language and technique.

Although not necessarily the most elegant piece out there, it has a right to be here - Im almost certain it isn't because the person knows Bush personally and finds him to be repugnant, but rather the current state of America he represents is far from ideal in the eyes of the artist, and his work reflects that. Deleting this would essentially be saying 'You can't come here because you don't agree with my political viewpoint on the Bush admninistration' which isn't a sensible view at all.

Not that I embrace the message... but the member has the right to his art. Mark it KidUnfriendly and let it go.

Most of my thoughts are already mentioned in this topic (I agree with every sentence from Jessica's reply). This image shouldn't be deleted or censored. If it will be deleted - I will simply stop supporting this project.

Lol This is just sad. But hey its his or her right to have this on here. Its his opinion and well he is titled to it. Plain and simple. you might not agree with it but someone might not agree with yours. so it needs to stay. No matter what we think of it.
