IF SOMEONE OUT THERE REALLY DONT WANT TO DRAW ANYTHING
I THINK THEY SHOULD DRAW A DOUGHNUT

IF IN THE END THE WHOLE THING IS TO BE RECOMPILED AND ALL THE BLACK SQUARES ARE TO BE ERASED IT WOULD NOT MATTER BUT... ?

INPUT ON THIS WOULD BE FUN.

WHAT IS THE PLAN WITH THE BLACK SQUARES?

ANYONE ELSE WANT TO DRAW A DOUGHNUT?

smiley

REAL MATURE JOE

SORRY GUYS I JUST COULDNT RESIST

would love to smiley

Not to be a stick-in-the mud, but I think the true goal is to get 1 million perspectives in any way they care to share - be it crudely drawn bathroom art to a masterpiece like yours.

There have been discussions on the black squares. The people who haven't drawn receive reminders and then ultimately a warning that their square will be given to someone else. The only down side to this is what looks like a growing number of forgotten placeholders that read "work in progress" or "coming soon".

Where we can help the most is to get people involved, which you've clearly been doing a great job of.

On a side note, I've actually found more resistance than I'd have expected from some people when I've asked them to join. Have any tricks or techniques you could share?

I know what you mean about how suprisingly difficult it is to get people involved in this. I was extremely suprised by the number of people who simply couldnt be bothered to take a few seconds of time to do this. (Including art students sheesh). I mean I've gotten 19 successful invitations but I've sent out at least 50 ecards. I think one of the problems ive seen come from technical issues with the invitations. So often I sent them and they never arrived or got buried in the spam folders. And even more, whenever I have tried using the widgets or links embeded in our own profiles - on the rare occasions i tried using them to invite people - i did notice that it did not count towards my tally.

I think that it would be easier to get people involved who dont really have the patience to try this out (even though they would love it once they started) if there were a little bit more flexible or even just better working ways to send out invitations.

Pat, you make a good point. You can PM Paul. I believe he'd posted earlier that he could send you a link that will work so you can send it in your own email. I've encountered the same issues with this email going directly to SPAM as well. I've been constructing an email to send out to my relatives that I'd like to place the link in. Perhaps after the holiday smiley

Random idea to get people involved #1:
Sit at a cafe with a free WiFi connection and guide willing strangers through the process! smiley

I THINK IT IS TO BAD BUT I CAN SEE IT HAPPENING THOUGH. PEOPLE DONT HAVE TIME, OR..... ANYWAY IT WOULD BE NICE TO FILL THE WHOLE CANVAS. WOULDNT MIND DRAWING ANOTHER ONE.

As Angeli said I think that the project needs one million unique artists. The rules for record breaking are quite strict.

This is one of the rules from the legal page of the OMM

All artists must register before contributing to the artwork. An accurate method of counting the artists must be pre-approved by Guinness World Records.

I'm having problems encoraging people to join too. I really feel quite pasionately about the project, as I know everyone in this thread does, I must be misrepresenting it somehow....? I'm sure if my friends/family work collegues took a look they would be drawn in (excuse the pun! smiley) immediately!

HI YEAH I THINK MAYBE I WAS A LITTLE HASTY TO POST MY IDEA
I SAW THE OTHER POST IN ANOTHER SECTION TELLING HOW
THE BLACK SQUARES WHERE GOING TO BE DEALT WITH. SORRY.
AND YOU ARE RIGHT.
WITH REGARDS TO GETTING PEOPLE TO JOIN SOME OF THE SUCCESSES HAVE COME FROM ACTUALLY SIGNING PEOPLE UP WHEN THEY ARE VISITING OR WHEN YOU HAVE THEM ON THE PHONE.
IT IS BASICALLY SAME PRINCIPAL AS ANGELI'S YOU HAVE TO WALK THEM THROUGH IT.

PEOPLE ARE TO BUSY I THINK.

LIKE PAT I HAVE ALSO HAD SOME INVITES THAT I DIDNT GET A CREDIT FOR. LATEST ONE, MY BROTHER CHRISTOPHER JUST SIGNED UP. DIDNT GET A CREDIT FOR HIM.

ANYWAY JUST DISREGARD THIS WHOLE SQUARE IDEA I HAD, SORRY.
I JUST LIKE DRAWING AND MY SQUARE HAS REACHED THE STAGE WHERE I CANT GO ON. PLEASE ACCEPT MY HUMBLE APOLOGY IT SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA AT FIRST.smiley

I'm thinking of starting again too Joe....when I first joined this project the program ran a lot slower the more detailed the drawing became. Now I'd like to have another go....my square is getting a bit cluttered now! Angeli has the right idea....keep changing it in a way that make for an interesting animation. I'm not sure I'm that clever! You would think I was good at that, working in the animation industry, but I'm strictly a model-maker! smiley I think I might fill the square in and start again....then I have the option to undo everything and return to my original image. Saying that, mine isn't so highly rated as yours, so it's not so hard to cover it up! smiley

I thought you guys might be interested/amused to know that I've reached 80% of the painting limit. I may not be able to keep my promise of change smiley

Aargh! I didn't know there was one.....could you ask for a reprieve from the administrators? Maybe you could ask if you could borrow the drawing limit from other unused squares! smiley

Hi Guys - happy new year!

The limit is a very recent addition that Eamonn has made to make sure that certain technical faults don't occur, and to spare server resources as the project grows. However I love the fact that people are using the drawing program to make movies, so this is something we will take away as soon as we can find a better solution (like a load of free servers from a big sponsor!).

I will try and find a way that we can temporarily extend the limit for certain members who have made such a massive contribution.

I was thinking of that small drawing program.. and the way it records the drawing process.. i only saw that in FLASH.. but never used it there.. !
I think you guys must use the advantages of that small program.. even after the project finishes.. It might provide simple replays to websites and many things.. and it's amazing how fast the image is loaded.. i'm using a dial up connection ..i've never seen that with other programs.. usually it take ages..

I was wondering, could you make a feature that would allow you to clear your stroke history and start over? I think this would be a great help. I love the replays, especially the complex ones, but it occurs to me that if someone would like to reuse a square, they can't because of the storage limit. I think there should be a choice to either purge your own stroke limit or reuse your own square!! Just a thought. I would love to see more from some of these people who make such amazing paintings.

Joe, as much as my diet denies the existence of donuts, I think I will dedicate one of my gallery pictures to a donut.
