Lissa Rankin was born in Florida, but has spent most of her life in California. A self-taught painter, she began creating art in 1991 and has exhibited her work in galleries and museums nationally. After years of practicing medicine as an OB/GYN, she took a year off to pursue her creative endeavors and will now be practicing only two days/week, to allow time for continued artistic exploration. Her layered, textural abstract paintings, notable for their gestural energy and lyrical movement, have received critical acclaim. She is the author of Encaustic: A Guide to Creating Fine Art With Wax, which is based on her interviews and studio visits with artists and dealers around the world and will be published by Sterling Publishing in 2009. She currently lives in Northern California with her husband and fellow artist, Matt Klein, and their daughter, Siena.
