Why has the amount raised (at the top of the web page) not risen in proportion to the amount of contributers to the site? I'm confused. Pip.

Only just noticed your point - wow, BIG jump in numbers. Agree, where's the contributions to show for it - seems a little odd.

Let's hoping there isn't a catch where some can sign up without contributing to the main cause.

Hmmm.

Ta very much. I really like your pic, too. it was one of the first that caught my eye when I viewed the big picture.

Perhaps the donation amount is calculated and updated manually whilst the contributor total is updated automatically?? Just a guess

But it would defeat the point if people could fill a square without a donation being taken.

Very well spotted Pip. Let me explain!

We’re conducting a test with the community over at deviantArt. We’ve set up a system whereby members can join the OMM without having to make a mandatory donation up front. So why have we done this?

1) We need an injection of numbers. It is generally agreed that it would be better to reach our goal and raise less money than achieve neither.

2) We can request donations from people at a later date - giving them the whole project term to contribute. Obviously we won’t be chasing the guys who have donated already smiley

3) Once we are at a really strong level of artists we can reinstate the minimum donation.

I hope you agree that this is a positive way forward. Of course there is a lot to consider (for example being stricter on people leaving their images blank, plus trying to eliminate duplicate accounts by the same person), hence the test, but it seems to be working since we have doubled our numbers in 24 hours.

I'd love to hear your thoughts however!

Paul

I think that it is a good way forward.

As the project has two goals then it seems worthwhile accelerating and increasing the number of art contributions early on in the project as this will have a positive effect on both outcomes as the project progresses. A snowball effect.

Good thinking smiley

I understand what you are trying to do and it is great to see numbers and colourful squares emerging in such a short period of time. Although, i do think it is a bit of shame that there is no minimum donation - as it will be the charities that lose out in the end, all for the sake of getting numbers up.

£3.50 minimum isn't a lot to ask really.

A tricky one though.

That's what I would have thought - £3.50 isn't much, but apparently it really puts most people off. The charities are on board though, because they will still be able to get access to loads of new people, plus we will kick the donations back in at some point.

The whole plan worked almost perfectly for me - seeing I could get in and play right away for free got me into it, then once I had explored a bit and seen how great everything was I decided it was definitely worth a donation.

The imperfect part is that I now can't see how to actually donate! I looked in the FAQ and found out how to get to the 'donate more!' link in my profile, so I went there and clicked on it... and unfortunately it turns out that that part isn't ready yet. I'll try to remember to come back later and have another go, but I'd suggest prioritising making that work, and also making it more obvious that more donations are always possible.

Hi Tim,

That feature will be up and running next week. We are making it much more obvious on how to upgrade your account by making a donation smiley

Okay, I just received the newsletter and excitedly logged in to make my donation "by clicking the DONATE NOW button on the right hand side of the screen when logged in". Except... where is that button?! Am I just being blind? I want to donate! Arrrgh!

Hi Tim,

The button is on every page that has a right hand side bar. Try logging in and then click on NEWS BLOG - it will be on that page.
