what does the community votes mean on the profile page underneath the picture along with the vote up and down buttons?

Every OMM member has the chance to vote for all of the other OMM images once, either +1 or -1. The total vote score is an indication of what the whole OMM community think of your contribution.

Also, I think that the overall score has a bearing on how likely your image is to be used in other parts of the project. For instance, the homepage features those that have received the highest daily, weekly, monthly and total vote.

In effect it gives you the chance to recognise the worthwhile efforts of other members or bury those images that just hurt your eyes
