Has anyone noticed that the density of the black squares is not the same at all places? Some rings have more filled squares and some rings have more black ones. It kind of looks like the growing rings of a tree

Thats incredible Annette! How long did you spend sorting that out? Must have taken ages and you are right looks like the expanding rings in a tree as it ages. Wonder why it has been done like that? Do you think the admins planned it that way so it looks good for the world record? Which, I think we are going to hit very shortly.

This is very interesting!

It's probably produced by the emails we send out. Zone 1 in the middle is the place where people have had longest to think of an idea, and have also received all of the newsletters and reminders to draw something.

We send out reminders to people who haven't drawn anything on day 7 and day 13 after registration. These emails will prompt people into logging back in and doing something which will cause a denser ring on the big picture. If a batch of emails fail for some reason a ring will be less dense as these people haven't been reminded.

Very unexpected but pretty beautiful!

Thinking more about, it could also be caused by high profile links being placed on different websites on different dates. Some website might have very creative users that sign up and draw something immediately (like deviantART) - causing a dense ring. Other websites might have users who are less artisitc and are more timid about drawing something straight away - causing a lighter ring.

well not that long actually, I just noticed it some time ago and thought is was funny.

It would be interesting to figure out why exactly it happend.. I would have expected the density to be the same at all places (since the entousiasm to fill the square wouldn't really depend on the time they joined). But if the denser rings came at the same time as the announcements to the art-websites.. that would be a quite good explanation i guess...

That's incredible! It kind of fits the mission of this project, too, doesn't it? Like a tree--we branch out to touch something great, each little square a molecule that makes up the whole. It's beautiful when you think of it metaphorically!
