I held a tablet for the first time in my life when one of my blockmates brought one in college. A cursor appears on your monitor depending on where your stylus is and it writes when you press it on the surface of the tablet. The one I tried was a cheap tablet but I heard some tablets out there have pressure sensitivity.

and yes, you can use it as a regular mouse.
