The One Million Masterpiece prepares to break current world record in March

The One Million Masterpiece, the world’s largest collaborative arts project, is looking for artists and non-artists alike to help break a world record during March. The project, launched in July 2006, is an ambitious attempt to unite people from all cultures across the world in the global language of art.

The One Million Masterpiece is transforming the Internet into a global canvas by inviting one million people to create their own individual section of one larger picture. Each image is placed alongside others, like a mosaic, to form one huge unique picture. Anyone with access to the Internet can take part by visiting www.millionmasterpiece.com.

The result will provide a unique snapshot of our world through the eyes of one million people. Once complete, the picture will be printed on a giant 80m canvas and unveiled in London, UK as a symbol of global unity and a celebration of 21st century global culture and society. It will be exhibited for six months before being taken on a tour of selected galleries.

The massive online canvas currently boasts 22,000 miniature paintings from artists representing 174 countries, but needs over 25,297 to take the official world record set in 1998. It’s expected that the record will be reached in late March, after which the next target is one million.

Project founder and artist Paul Fisher states that : "The support of the online arts community has been, and is, critical to the project’s success. These people can see conceptual power in a piece of work produced by such a vast number of people – with every image saying something about individual person behind it."

As well as being a challenging artistic venture, The One Million Masterpiece is a non-profit initiative that aims to raise over £1 million for global humanitarian and environmental charities, including Save The Children, Oxfam, World Cancer Research Fund, ActionAid and WWF. This will be achieved through voluntary donations collected from generous project members.

Joining www.theonemillionmasterpiece.com is free, although participants can opt to give a secure donation to the charity fund.
